Robertson Bell are recruiting for an Assistant Financial Accountant on behalf of an established organisation.

This is a great opportunity for a part-qualified accountant or someone actively studying towards their professional qualification to join a well-established finance team. The role offers broad exposure to financial accounting, with a particular focus on month-end reporting, reconciliations, financial controls and maintaining the accuracy of the ledger.

It would suit someone looking to take the next step in their accounting career and gain greater ownership of core financial accounting processes.

The Role

Working as part of the financial accounting team, you will:

  • Support the monthly close process, ensuring key accounting activities are completed accurately and to deadline.
  • Complete detailed bank and balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving variances.
  • Prepare and post journals, including accruals, prepayments, deferrals and other month-end adjustments.
  • Review accounting entries and ensure transactions are correctly recorded through to trial balance.
  • Assist with the production of monthly financial information and analysis.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and calculate monthly depreciation.
  • Reconcile payroll information and investigate any discrepancies.
  • Support the preparation of statutory and tax-related information, including CIS returns.
  • Assist with the maintenance and review of supplier records, including appropriate verification and due diligence checks.
  • Analyse expenditure and support the correct treatment of revenue and capital costs.
  • Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for audit purposes.
  • Prepare correcting journals and investigate unusual or incorrect postings.
  • Provide financial information and analysis to colleagues across the wider organisation.
  • Support the wider finance team with ad-hoc accounting projects and reporting requirements.

The role provides excellent breadth across financial accounting and will give you the opportunity to develop your technical knowledge while working alongside experienced finance professionals.

About You

We are looking for someone who is keen to continue developing their accounting career and has already gained solid experience within a finance environment.

You will ideally have:

  • Studied towards or be currently studying ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA.
  • Around three years' experience in a relevant finance or accounting position.
  • Strong reconciliation experience, including the ability to investigate and resolve complex issues.
  • Good knowledge of journals and month-end accounting.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical ability.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to explain financial information to colleagues without a finance background.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage deadlines effectively.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach to your work.

Previous experience within the not-for-profit or public sector would be highly advantageous, particularly for candidates who have worked within a complex or regulated environment.

Experience of Sage would be useful, although not essential.

What's on Offer?

  • Circa £40,000 salary
  • Hybrid working
  • A varied role covering a broad range of financial accounting activities.
  • Excellent exposure to month-end, reconciliations, financial controls and reporting.
  • The opportunity to develop your technical accounting experience.
  • Support for continued professional accountancy studies.
  • A strong opportunity for career development within an established finance function.

If you're a part-qualified accountant looking for a role that will broaden your technical experience and give you greater responsibility across financial accounting, we'd love to hear from you.
