Robertson Bell is supporting a leading national charity to recruit a Payroll Manager on a permanent basis.

This is a fully remote role with the opportunity to take ownership of a large payroll function within an established team, with full remote working and responsibility for a small payroll team.

The Role

The Payroll Manager will take responsibility for the organisation's end-to-end payroll function, overseeing the monthly payroll for approximately 2,000 employees and managing two Payroll Officers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the monthly payroll process for approximately 2,000 employees, ensuring accurate and timely payment.
  • Leading, supporting and developing a team of two Payroll Officers, including hands-on checking and quality assurance.
  • Acting as the key link between Finance and HR, managing payroll deadlines, resolving queries and escalating issues where required.
  • Ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements, pension regulations and relevant payroll legislation across three pension schemes.
  • Completing payroll reconciliations and ensuring accurate posting into the finance system.
  • Driving improvements across the payroll function, including formalising processes, resolving system issues and supporting future integration and automation projects.
  • Providing clear and accurate payroll advice to stakeholders across the organisation.

The Person

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven experience managing an end-to-end payroll function for 1,000+ employees, ideally with management experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of payroll, HMRC regulations and pension compliance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work confidently with the wider organisation.
  • Previous experience managing and developing payroll staff.
  • The ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while maintaining strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.

This is a strong opportunity for an experienced Payroll Manager looking for genuine ownership of a sizeable payroll function, responsibility for a small team and the opportunity to improve systems and processes within a national charity.
