Financial Control & Accounting Manager
Birmingham | Hybrid – 2 days in the office | £62k to £65k | Permanent
A hands-on technical accounting role with real scope to strengthen controls, improve processes and take ownership of statutory reporting.
This is a brand-new role within a large, complex housing organisation, created to bring greater ownership and consistency to financial control and accounting. You’ll take the lead on year-end and statutory accounts, strengthen balance sheet controls, and become the day-to-day lead for the external audit - giving you genuine ownership over some of the organisation’s most important financial processes.
There’s also plenty to get your teeth into. The finance function is going through a wider improvement programme, with opportunities to improve systems, documentation and processes, but the immediate priority is getting the fundamentals right. You’ll be joining at an important point of change, with the autonomy to identify what needs fixing and put more robust ways of working in place.
A role you can really make your own – this is a brand-new position with genuine scope to shape how financial control and accounting operates
High-impact technical exposure – housing, charity accounting, FRS 102, component accounting, leases and income recognition
A seat at the heart of change – influence how finance strengthens its controls, processes and ways of working
A platform for progression – build your profile across a large and complex organisation while working closely with senior finance leaders
The chance to leave your mark – improve a function that is actively evolving rather than stepping into a role where everything is already established
Lead the year-end statutory accounts process, including lead schedules and disclosure notes
Act as the day-to-day contact for external auditors through interim and final audit
Take ownership of balance sheet controls, reconciliations and supporting documentation
Lead on component, fixed asset and lease accounting, including FRS 102 changes
Oversee AP and AR team leaders, supporting planning, quality and delivery
Identify and implement improvements across finance systems, processes and procedures
ACA or ACCA qualified, ideally with a practice or audit background
Strong hands-on experience preparing statutory accounts from a trial balance
Essential housing experience, with knowledge of Housing and Charity SORP
Good understanding of component accounting, leases and FRS 102
Strong balance sheet, audit and financial controls experience
Advanced Excel skills and a proactive approach to solving problems and improving processes
If you’re a technically strong accountant with a social housing background, who enjoys getting into the detail, taking ownership and improving how things work, this is an opportunity to make a visible difference in a newly created role.
