Robertson Bell are working with an established not-for-profit organisation to recruit a Senior Financial Accountant into their finance team.
This is a broad financial accounting position suited to a fully qualified accountant with strong experience within the not-for-profit or public sector. With responsibility for a team of three, you will take ownership of key areas of the month-end and year-end cycle, ensuring strong financial controls, accurate reporting and compliance with relevant statutory requirements.
The Role
You will be responsible for:
- Managing and developing a team of three finance professionals.
- Overseeing the month-end close process and ensuring accounting records are completed accurately and on time.
- Reviewing complex balance sheet reconciliations, investigating variances and resolving outstanding items.
- Preparing and reviewing accruals, prepayments, depreciation and other month-end journals.
- Maintaining the fixed asset register and ensuring balances reconcile to the general ledger.
- Supporting the preparation of monthly management and financial reporting.
- Preparing statutory accounts and supporting schedules in line with relevant accounting standards.
- Coordinating key elements of the external audit and responding to audit queries.
- Supporting VAT, CIS and other statutory reporting requirements.
- Monitoring cash, banking and treasury information where required.
- Producing clear financial analysis and information for senior stakeholders.
- Working alongside wider finance teams to ensure accurate forecasting, reporting and financial information.
- Reviewing existing processes and identifying opportunities to strengthen controls and improve efficiency.
- Providing guidance and training to colleagues across the finance function.
- Deputising for senior finance colleagues when required.

About You
We are looking for a qualified accountant with strong financial accounting experience and a good technical grounding.
You will ideally have:
- ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent qualification.
- Strong experience in a not-for-profit, public sector or similarly regulated environment.
- At least five years' experience in a relevant financial accounting position.
- Strong understanding of month-end, year-end and statutory accounting processes.
- Experience preparing or contributing to statutory accounts and external audit.
- Strong experience with balance sheet reconciliations and resolving complex accounting issues.
- Excellent analytical skills and a high level of attention to detail.
- Advanced Excel skills and confidence working with financial systems.
- Experience managing or supporting the development of a small team.
- The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues and senior stakeholders.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Experience within the not-for-profit and/or public sector is particularly important for this position. The successful candidate will need to understand the financial controls, reporting requirements and operating environment associated with these sectors.
