Robertson Bell is pleased to be partnering with a well-established education-focused not-for-profit organisation to recruit a Financial Controller on a permanent basis.

Following significant investment in finance systems and reporting, our client has transformed its finance function into a stable, high-performing team with modernised processes and improved financial reporting. With much of the transformation complete, the focus is now on strengthening financial controls, leading the finance operations team and driving continuous improvement.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong finance professional who enjoys financial control, audit, process improvement and team leadership within a collaborative, values-driven organisation.

The Role

  • Lead and develop a small Finance Operations team, ensuring high standards and effective service delivery.
  • Take ownership of the organisation's financial control framework, maintaining strong governance and compliance.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, oversee fixed assets and monitor working capital.
  • Manage central budgets, including capital expenditure and corporate support functions.
  • Lead the year-end process, managing the external audit and supporting statutory reporting.
  • Review and improve financial policies, procedures and internal controls.
  • Oversee key transactional finance activities, including banking, cash flow forecasting and ledger operations.
  • Work closely with Finance Business Partners and the wider finance team to improve reporting and financial processes.

The Organisation

Our client is a values-led not-for-profit organisation with a strong reputation and a highly stable finance team. Following substantial investment in systems and reporting, the finance function is now focused on strengthening controls, improving efficiency and supporting the organisation's continued success.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an organisation where finance is highly valued and continuous improvement is actively encouraged.

Essential Criteria

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) preferred, although exceptional part-qualified, finalist or AAT Level 4 qualified candidates will also be considered.
  • Experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or similar technical accounting role.
  • Strong knowledge of financial controls, balance sheet reconciliations, fixed assets and year-end reporting.
  • Previous experience managing or supervising finance staff.
  • Experience leading external audits and maintaining a robust control environment.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A proactive approach with a passion for improving financial processes.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within education, the public sector or another not-for-profit organisation.
  • Experience improving financial controls, policies and procedures.
  • Experience working within a multi-site or complex organisation.

This role offers a salary of £50,000 - £55,000, an excellent benefits package and hybrid working, with regular office presence to support the Finance Operations team.

If you're looking for a Financial Controller role where you can lead a team, strengthen financial controls and make a genuine impact within a progressive not-for-profit organisation, we'd love to hear from you.
