We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join a complex and purpose-driven organisation during an exciting period of strategic development and transformation.

This is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing financial control, statutory reporting, treasury management, budgeting, forecasting, and the wider financial governance framework. Working closely with the Finance Director, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring financial sustainability, delivering insightful reporting, and supporting strategic decision-making across the organisation.

Financial Strategy & Reporting

  • Lead the production and development of monthly management accounts, including P&L, cash flow, balance sheet, and capital expenditure reporting.
  • Deliver insightful financial commentary, variance analysis, and performance reporting to senior stakeholders.
  • Support the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, long-term financial plans, and investment appraisals.
  • Ensure budgets are accurately reflected within financial systems and reporting tools.

Statutory Reporting & Treasury

  • Oversee the preparation and submission of statutory financial returns and year-end financial statements.
  • Support the external audit process and maintain strong relationships with auditors.
  • Manage treasury operations, banking relationships, and cash flow forecasting.
  • Ensure financial policies and treasury practices remain aligned with best practice and organisational objectives.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and develop multiple finance functions, ensuring effective prioritisation and delivery across teams.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships across finance and wider business areas.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.

Financial Control & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain and enhance a robust financial control environment.
  • Ensure financial regulations, accounting procedures, and governance frameworks are effectively implemented and regularly reviewed.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives across finance operations and reporting.
  • Support strategic projects and organisational change initiatives where required.

About You

You will be a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or CIPFA) with significant experience in financial leadership, management reporting, and statutory accounting within a complex organisation.

  • Strong experience managing and developing finance teams
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Advanced analytical and technical accounting skills
  • The ability to translate complex financial information into meaningful business insight
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • A proactive and collaborative leadership style

Experience within the Higher Education sector or another similarly complex environment would be highly advantageous
