The Role

The Financial Accountant will play a key role within the Finance team, supporting the delivery of high-quality financial accounting across the organisation. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you will take ownership of financial reporting, treasury operations, and balance sheet integrity, while working closely with stakeholders across the organisation.

  • Manage treasury operations, including cashflow forecasting, banking, and investment activity.
  • Support the production of annual financial statements and liaise with external auditors.
  • Lead on month-end and year-end processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain and ensure the integrity of the balance sheet through regular reconciliations and controls.
  • Oversee working capital and cash management activities across the organisation.
  • Prepare VAT returns and support tax compliance processes.
  • Manage intercompany accounting and ensure accurate reporting across the group.
  • Contribute to regulatory and statistical returns.
  • Line manage and support the development of a junior team member.
  • Continuously review and improve financial controls, processes, and systems.

Candidate Requirements

  • Part-qualified CCAB qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW or equivalent).
  • Experience in financial accounting, including month-end and year-end close.
  • Strong understanding of balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls.
  • Experience using financial systems and advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage both finance and non finance stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively across teams.

Desirable:

  • Experience within Higher Education or a large, complex organisation.
  • Experience supporting financial statements and working with auditors.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
