Financial Accountant

Location: Birmingham | Working Pattern: Flexible/Hybrid | Salary: £47,500–£52,500

If you are looking for a role where your technical accounting skills are trusted, developed, and clearly valued, this is an opportunity to deepen your public sector experience while maintaining a healthy balance between work and life. You will take ownership of key statutory processes, gain exposure to complex government reporting, and work in an environment that supports flexibility and progression.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the preparation of statutory accounts and year-end audits, giving you responsibility for high-profile submissions and strengthening your public sector credentials.
  • Work on Whole of Government Accounts submissions and compliance, building experience that is highly transferable across government and arm’s-length bodies.
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee reconciliations, allowing you to directly influence the accuracy and quality of financial reporting.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning, broadening your role beyond statutory reporting and developing your commercial awareness.
  • Provide clear financial guidance to colleagues and senior leaders, helping you become a trusted adviser rather than a back-office function.
  • Work closely with internal and external auditors, giving you valuable exposure to audit processes and senior stakeholders.

What you’ll need

  • Fully qualified Accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA) with experience in government or the wider public sector.
  • Strong knowledge of public sector accounting frameworks, statutory reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail and confidence working to fixed deadlines.
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills to support reporting and modelling.
  • The ability to explain financial information clearly and build effective relationships with non-finance colleagues.

About the company

You will join a Birmingham-based government department focused on transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. The role offers genuine flexibility, with hybrid working and the ability to balance office and home-based work, alongside support for professional development and long-term career progression within the public sector.

Apply today to take the next step in your public sector finance career while enjoying flexibility, responsibility, and meaningful impact.
