The Cabinet Office has a vital role to play at the centre of government. Its purpose is clear: to maintain the integrity of the union, the security of the country and a flourishing democracy; to ensure delivery of the Government’s programme and the Prime Minister’s priorities; and to ensure the delivery of the finest public services by attracting and developing the best public servants and improving the efficiency of government.
The Financial Control Team is responsible for developing strategies, policies and processes governing financial transactions; ensuring they remain fit for purpose and meet Cabinet Office needs. This central expertise supports various business areas within the Department; delivering services to an ever-changing business and making the best use of technologies to drive continuous improvement and customer service excellence.
This role requires the post holder to ensure VAT is correctly accounted for in the General Ledger and to ensure the monthly VAT Returns are complete and accurate. In addition, the post holder will establish and develop effective working relationships with a number of stakeholders, including the Shared Service Centre (SSCL), Finance Business Partners, HMRC, Internal and External Audit.
Key responsibilities include;
*The aim is to facilitate correct accounting VAT treatment for Cabinet Office transactions for both accounts payable and accounts receivable
*Manage all engagement with HMRC in relation to tax and prepare responses to HMRC for any requests for information or audit queries
*Respond to VAT questions from Business areas or other finance colleagues, working closely with the Tax Centre of Excellence where required
*Liaise with SSCL to finalise the Monthly VAT Return for submission to HMRC and review the General Ledger before agreeing final position
*Keep the Procurement Category and Cost Centre list up to date with any changes required, ensuring SSCL and all areas have the latest list
The successful candidate will be a part/fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, etc) with previous experience in a finance role. We are looking for a strong technical competence over a range of financial disciplines and professional credibility through the ability to apply high-quality financial insight in the business. You will be an ambitious and proactive finance professional, with first-class communication skills. Confident in advising, challenging and negotiating with people, often senior to yourself, with different opinions. Salary – £31,339 – £38,580 + £2,500 or £5,000 accountancy allowance (Dependant on qualification status)
